Zander drove to the nick in silence. He handed Kate over to a uniformed officer, promising he’d be down to talk to her in a few minutes. Reaching the squad room, he sank into the chair behind his desk and rubbed his hands over his face.

“You OK, partner?” Isabel asked.

He shrugged. “Last night everything was perfect and now, today, it’s a total disaster.”

Isabel nodded. “I hear ya. Meant to ask, she’s wearing a ring on her left hand. It looks just like the cracker one you got couple of weeks ago.”

“It is that one,” he said quietly. “I proposed last night. She said yes.”

Isabel beamed. “Congratulations.”

“We were meant to be going ring shopping this lunchtime. Instead, I’m dragging her back to the nick and threatening to arrest her.”

Isabel grabbed the pink notepaper she preferred to use when interviewing. “She really doesn’t look well today.”

“No, she doesn’t. And I don’t believe for a second she took that money. If she did, why come here and call me?”

DI Holmes appeared as if from nowhere. “Perhaps she’s trying to hide behind you. If you’re married, whatever she’s told you is privileged information. You can’t be made to testify against her.”

“That’s codswallop and you know it. She’s not hiding behind me. And she hasn’t told me anything! First I heard of this money was this morning when her brother rang me.” His temper flared for a moment before he tamped it down. “I’m marrying her because I love her.”

“And the baby? There must be a man involved.”

“She was assaulted, Guv. She remembers nothing of the attack.”

“So she says. Maybe she’s just trying to get you on her side.”

Zander stood, almost nose to nose with his boss. He didn’t care how it looked. “Pot, kettle, black. Sir.” He’d heard how the Guv had met his wife, and got involved with her when she was a witness in a murder enquiry. “She told me about the assault. Seemed pretty up front about it. She’s reluctant to press charges, but then it was her brother’s business partner who raped her, and her brother told her to drop it before firing her. She hadn’t told anyone because she didn’t know who to trust.”

“Not an easy thing to deal with.” DI Holmes leaned against the desk. “However, it does give her motive and means to steal the money.”

“But I still don’t think she did it.” Zander sighed. “I want to trust my gut on this one, Guv.”

DI Holmes stared at him. “Gut, head, or heart, Zander? By rights you shouldn’t be anywhere near that interview room, but I know you’d sneak in somehow. Isabel and I will both be there. The instant you cross the line, do or say anything to impede this investigation, you are out of the room and on suspension. Got it?”

Zander nodded glumly. “Yes, sir.”

Kate sat in an interview room. A uniformed officer stood by the door. She wasn’t sure why she’d hadn’t been arrested as it was obvious Jonathan had blamed her for taking the money.
